The Department of Energy & Climate Change have announced today (Wednesday 9th April 2014) the launch of the domestic renewable heat incentive (RHI). This government scheme will pay homeowners £1,000’s of pounds when they choose to heat their home using a renewable energy technology such as a ground or air source heat pump. This is fantastic opportunity for off-gas households to upgrade their heating.
Ground source heat pumps and air source heat pumps are very efficient at producing hot water and heating, they will typically produce 3-4 units of heat energy for each unit of electricity used. This means that homeowners can benefit from reduced energy bills compared to traditional heating methods such as oil, LPG or direct electric. The RHI will also pay a 7 year tariff of 18.8p/kWhr for ground source or 7.3p/kWhr for air source.
We have calculated that homeowners with a typical 3 bedroom house could get repaid around £6,500 when they install an air source heat pump or around £15,000 when they install a ground source heat pump. Please use our RHI calculator to see how much you could get paid back when you install a ground or air source heat pump.
If you already have a heat pump installed and wish to learn about the RHI application process please see our RHI pages >>
