Sustainable heating for a large apartment block

Source Energy were selected by Cool Planet/ Econergy (the heat pump team within British Gas) to provide heat pump installation services across the SW of England. Our first project was the delivery of a complex solution of 27 Dimplex ground source heat pumps providing heating and hot water within a large affordable housing apartment block for a housing association, Meadow Flats in St. Ives, Cornwall.

This site had access challenges as it is located next to the Tate St. Ives a major tourist attraction. The project also had a complicated history.  There was political sensitivities regarding the moving of tenants whilst the existing building was demolished and the new one constructed.

Due to the poor economic climate the original main contractor and heat pump solution provider had gone into administration. Therefore the client was keen to benefit from the financial security of dealing with a British Gas company whilst also supporting the local economy by using a local company (Source Energy) for successful delivery.

The site was very constrained so the project delivery was complex. Boreholes were installed beneath the building foundations and the delivery program was short due to the delays in starting the construction project. Site co-ordination and the heat pump installation schedule was challenging but Cool Planet and Source Energy worked together to successfully meet project time-scales and requirements. This has reached level 4 for the code for sustainable homes.
